- The National Wastelands Development Board (NWDB) was established in 1985 under the Ministry of Environment & Forests with the primary objectives of:
I. Increasing tree cover and other greenery on wastelands, II. Preventing fertile land from becoming wasteland, and III. Developing perspective plans and programs for the management and development of wastelands within the overall policy framework of the country.
- In 1992, the Board was moved to the Ministry of Rural Development and placed under a new Department of Wastelands Development, led by a Minister of State.
