B.3. Government Initiatives to Boost the Education Sector in India

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 seeks to comprehensively transform India’s education landscape, spanning from primary schooling to higher education. One of its major goals is to boost the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education from 26.3% in 2018 to 50% by 2035. Key reforms under this policy include:

  • Elevating the status of teaching by enhancing teacher training and recruitment to make it a preferred profession.
  • Encouraging multilingualism, with a strong emphasis on using the mother tongue or regional languages as the medium of instruction.
  • Promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills in schools and higher education institutions.
  • Encouraging research and innovation in higher education institutions.
  • Establishing a single regulator for higher education institutions to ensure quality and accountability.

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

The PMKVY is a skill development program launched by the Government of India to provide training to youth and increase their employability. The program aims to train 40 million people in different skills by 2020.

Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA)
