N.1. Project Tiger

About

Project Tiger is a conservation effort in India aimed at protecting the endangered Indian Tiger. In 1900, India was home to about 40,000 tigers, but by 1972, their population had drastically declined to only around 1,800. In response to this alarming drop,

  1. Protecting the Tiger Population: The initiative focuses on ensuring a stable tiger population in India, recognizing their significance in science, the economy, culture, beauty, and ecological balance.
  2. Preserving Vital Habitats: The project also strives to conserve key natural areas, recognizing them as national treasures to be preserved for the enjoyment, education, and well-being of future generations.

Aim

The overall aim of Project Tiger is two fold:

  1. Conservation of Tigers: To protect and increase the number of tigers, ensuring their survival.
  2. Balancing with Tribal Rights: While conserving tigers is crucial, the project also emphasizes the importance of balancing the rights of tribal people who live in and around tiger reserves. It seeks to find a harmony where both the endangered species and the tribal communities can coexist.
