A.2. Status of poverty in India

Global MPI 2022

Over the span of 15 years, from 2005–06 to 2019–21, an impressive 415 million people in India successfully moved out of multidimensional poverty. During this period, the incidence of poverty saw a dramatic decline — dropping from 55.1% to 16.4%.

According to recent estimates, India’s National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) score stands at 0.118, with 25.01% of the population still identified as multidimensionally poor.

  • Among all Indian states, Kerala has emerged as the best performer, recording the lowest poverty rate in the country — with just 0.71% of its population living in poverty.
  • Kottayam of Kerala is the only district in India without poverty. 
  • Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh have registered the highest poverty rate across India. 
  • 51.91% of the population in Bihar is classified as poor, followed by Jharkhand (42.16%) and Uttar Pradesh (37.79%).
