K. Goods and Services Tax Council
The 101st Amendment Act laid the foundation for the introduction of the new Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime and the formation of the GST Council in India.
The GST Council, which oversees the implementation and functioning of GST, consists of 33 members—2 from the central government and 31 from the 28 states and 3 union territories that have enacted relevant legislation.
The primary function of the GST Council is to provide recommendations to both the central and state governments regarding the GST framework.
It has representation from both the centre and states and hence is a federal body.
The following individuals are part of the council:Â
- Union Finance Minister as chairpersonÂ
- Union Minister of States overseeing finances or revenueÂ
- The state ministers in charge of finance, taxation, or other ministers are chosen by the government of each state.
Any regulation modifications, revisions, or rate changes for products and services in India must be approved by the GST Council.
